In these blogs I am suppose to share how I go from having almost nothing at 51 years old ($201 in my savings account) to having $1,000,000.00 in the bank in just 1,000 days. But I realized I have NOT shared with you HOW I am going to do that.
So in this blog I share the first part to becoming a millionaire and probably the most important part of them all... "compound interest"
I know, when I first heard that I groaned - I HATE math, finances, economy, etc... these were painful topics for me and things I really found gruelingly painful to read about. But it is a starting point that every person, regardless of age or financial status needs to be aware of because it really can and does change the future...
I read a book called "rich dad poor dad" (this should be mandatory reading for all school students and adults alike). It talked about how this man had a very intelligent dad who was absolutely brilliant with all kinds of educational degrees behind him but he was poor - and it is the story of his best friends dad who took him under his wings as a self made rich man without any educational degrees behind him. How both dad's brought important lessons to this young man's life, but how the rich dad taught him things that they simply don't teach in school.
The book was actually easy to read and understand and wasn't painful at all... the most important lesson shared in the book was the latte factor - that if you put in your retirement account the cost of a latte a day you could be a millionaire in less than 30 years... it was so simple but it made perfect sense.
So I figured out how much money I spent eating out each week (lunches, the occasional dinner, breakfasts on the go, snacks, etc.) and figured if I made my own lunches and simply cut down a bit each day I could save $10 per day. This is my first step to becoming a millionaire in 1,000 days.
I put $50 a week in my retirement savings plan (my savings account).
I started on July 17, 2010 with $201.00 in my RSP bank account
I put $50 per week in the account direct deposit from my paycheck
I have gotten use to living on $50 less each week and it hasn't been a burden.
I did one contract for a webstore (rewrite of website and search engine optimization SEO) and put 10% of that contract money directly into my RSP bank account
I have an entertainment company that provides Christmas entertainment (the Dickens Carolers) that I have been running since 1979. I took 20% of that income this year and put it right into my RSP bank account.
That means I have put $50 away from my day job every week
I put a minimum of 10% of any side jobs income into my account as well
So where does that leave me today?
$8,200.00
Think about it... that is $7,999.00 more than what I had only 208 days ago...and it is earning interest!
In my next financial state update I will share with you my next step in growing that number drastically through online marketing.
If I can make this happen so can you... why not take the 1,000 day challenge to achieving your dreams and goals too.
Today I take action - letting every small step be compounded into my lifetime dreams and goals.

Day 208 Feb. 8 , 2011 My emotional state
It is difficult to believe that I am already at day 208 - so many days have gone by and my progress has been painfully slow. I have been having emotional hurdles that have really been challenging me but I am learning from each and every experience and I am coming to understand myself better each and every day. I am learning what my triggers are and what drives me to eat, what drives me to avoid exercise, what triggers cause me to stumble.
I had said before that my 1,000 day journey was just that - a journey. On this journey I am becoming a better me, but sometimes looking in that mirror isn't easy. As humans we tend to avoid looking at the things that are difficult. We avoid pain in general and seek out pleasure... so self reflection and analysis is usually on the bottom of the list of things to do. But without it we never move beyond where we are now.
This past week my 20 year old daughter got evicted from her first apartment - we knew it would eventually happen as she hasn't had a job in 3 months and I cannot afford to keep helping her out without compromising my own dreams. So, after 3 months of battling and endless loans from the "bank of Mom" she got 24 hour notice to move out and Mom once again came to the rescue. She has moved back in with me and I must say my partner Dave has been incredibly patient and giving of his time to help.
There is a part of me that is thrilled to have my daughter home - but there is also a part of me that is really unhappy about it all. The first time she moved out it was on bad terms - she was trashing the house and not contributing to the family at all and I felt terribly used as the "drop in" point where she would leave her trash and belongings then take off to party with her friends. I understand this is normal behavior for a young adult but this isn't the way I needed to live, nor Dave's. We couldn't stand the mess and filth that followed her every action and eventually I was left with no other choice than to ask her to move out. So for the last 1 and a half years she has been living on her own. The first year she shared a place with a group of friends - the last 5 months she had her own place on her own.
During this time I managed to get her old room cleaned up and redecorated with new furniture too... my house was cleaner and more organized and I have been throwing out things that are no longer of value to me. It has been great and I finally have a living room that adults can enjoy - it is a calming ambiance without clutter and I love it. Now that she is back however the guest room is back to being trashed, the basement is worse that it has ever been, my garage is filled with things she has yet to put away or put into storage - and she hasn't done a thing to clean up after herself. I am so frustrated and I feel used. Monday and Tuesday nights I went straight home from work and went straight to bed. I simply couldn't face the mess or lack of effort.
I love my daughter and I don't want to fight with her - but this is simply unacceptable. Last night after work I went to the gym (the first time since moving my daughter home last week) - I put on my headset with calming music and hit the elliptical machine for 30 minutes, then did my floor exercises for 15 minutes followed by deep breathing meditation & gratitude for 15 minutes. By the time I left the gym I had my head on straight and my heart was at peace with my decision.
When I got home my daughter was just getting ready to leave the house to visit a friend for the next 3 days - she was going to leave the house trashed and all her moving unpacked and everywhere. She was also bringing groceries to her friends house, groceries that I paid for with my hard earned money... I could not have felt more used. But instead of exploding (which is how I use to handle pain) I calmly told her how angry and used I felt. I also told her that if she isn't going to put any effort into taking care of her things that they would be left on the curb in the morning for the garbage collector. It wasn't a threat - it was a reality check.
I am done being the dumping grounds for my daughter who is old enough to take responsibility for herself and her things. If she can't take care of her things then she doesn't need them anymore. It's just that simple.
This morning I woke up calm and ready to take on the world. Today is Wednesday which means it is my day to work from home on marketing (something I really enjoy).
I realize this is a very long post (and only part 1 of 2 for today) - but I also realize that I have not been sharing my journey on this blog - I have simply been using it to advertise what I am trying to achieve without any real substance on how I am getting there.
So here is me - laying it all out for the world to read.
I am a 51 year old mother of 2 girls (ages 18 & 20) both of whom live at home with me again. I have an amazing boyfriend who I am proud to wear his promise ring who has been the light of my life and my best friend for over 7 years now. We have an amazing relationship that has grown over the years into something profoundly deep that allows me to reach for the stars while remaining firmly grounded in reality.
I work full time for Francis Plumbing & Heating with my partner Dave - helping to grow his company through my marketing expertise. Through the changes I have brought to the company I have watched all kinds of sales records being broken and the profit margins have skyrocketed. Dave values me and allows me to take full rein on the marketing and management of the business and he and I are both reaping the rewards of that trust.
I still own a few small businesses on the side (some are seasonal, some are simply ongoing projects that bring in the occasional income). You see I had to raise 2 children with almost no financial support over the last 7 years, so I did whatever I could to make sure they never went without the necessities of life nor the fun activities that kids need when growing up. We all have to have dreams and I devoted a great deal of my resources to make sure they got to experience the things they wanted within reason of course.
There is so much to share - but for now, this blog represents my emotional state and the calm serenity that comes from putting myself first (by giving myself permission to go to the gym and giving myself time to reflect and write).
Like they say on the air planes - put your oxygen mask on first then you can help others. My personal time is my oxygen mask - it feeds my soul and gives me the calmness to tackle the hurdles that life throws my way.
Today I am calm.
My card of the day is "imagination"
My affirmation for that card is
"The image in my mind today has the potential to change my tomorrow"
The three things I am grateful for today:
1. My mentor MaryAnn D'Ambrosio who showed me how starting each day with 3 things I am grateful for changes my disposition from frustration to appreciation for each day... what a huge mindset change that has really impacted my life. Thanks MaryAnn!
2. My mentor MaryAnn D'Ambrosio who created the most beautiful deck of cards she calls "Just Be Boundless Energy - The art of being cards" that make me spend a few minutes each day just reflecting on my own goals and dreams - my oxygen so to speak.
If you haven't seen these cards they can be found at www.LeapWithoutLimits.com (my best investment in myself so far). Thanks again MaryAnn - You really are helping me leap without limits dear friend!
3. My beloved Dave who is incredibly patient with me when I am struggling and who is actually taking a more active role for the first time in dealing with my daughters. What an amazing support he has been and I am eternally gratefully!
Today I leave my knee jerk explosions behind and take leaps forward in calm assertiveness letting my imagination awaken to new possibilities...

joining the gym
Today (Jan 22, 2011) I joined a gym!
I realize that most people who are trying to loose weight join gyms, but for me it isn't just about the weight - it is about simply being able to walk.
It is very cold and icy in Ottawa right now and it is expected to stay that way for another couple of months. I just got back from the most amazing cruise (internet marketing cruise) where I lost 8 pounds simply by being very very active enjoying endless summer weather. I was walking every day extensively. I loved the way all that walking made me feel and when I got back to Canada realized that I was now stuck indoors with no way to continue the exercise I was enjoying.
I've included a short video as I realize I need to share more about myself.
By the way did I mention that my bank account is now sitting at over $8,000.00 - not bad for my first few months and well on my way to my 1 million dollar target.
I can't wait to share with you my successes and how I got there along the way.
